HAPPY VALENTINES DAY
Three tv maps showing our position/location today in Vanuatu. This area of the world was home to bloody fighting during WWII. It is a partly sunny day and a very hot 88 degrees.
Vanuatu Background Info:
Vanuatu
is a South Pacific Ocean nation made up of roughly 80 islands that stretch or
1000 miles. The population of these islands
is nearly a quarter million. They gained
their independence in 1980 for a joint French & United Kingdom rule and is
now a member of the United Nations.
There are several active volcanoes on the islands and earthquakes do
occur frequently. The four mainstays of
the economy are agriculture, tourism, offshore financial services, and raising
cattle. Exports include copra, kava,
beef, cocoa, and timber.
Luganville Background Info:
Luganville is the second largest city in the Vanuatu islands after the capital, Port Vila, where we will be tomorrow. It is on the island of Espiritu Santo with a population of 18,000. It served as a major base of operations for American troops during WWII. It was the largest base in the South Pacific with 4 airfields and 5 military hospitals. As a result of this history, it attracts tourism along with diving. Its other industries are the same as I mentioned about Vanuatu.
I enjoyed this California merlot.
Double order of the black mussels.
Wish we could say we enjoyed this pan seared pork medallions. They were perfectly cooked but not tasty.
Tonight's Christmas tree.
New York cheesecake was not New York cheesecake!!
There was basically nothing inside the terminal but I walked out in the field next to it to see what some locals were selling. This is one seller. She had women's tops. Other places were selling wood carvings, local made simple jewelry, and other tourist items. I did not need anything so right back to the ship. For lunch in Compass Rose I tried this duck confit spring rolls. I did not care for it however.
I did love this. Pulled pork sliders with fries and cole slaw. This is one of two small speed boats used for rescue or other purposes by the crew.
